WiFi client devices have a complex web of discovery processes due to the 59 6GHz channels available in the United States for Low Power Indoor (LPI) certified devices. Even in 5GHz, we introduced mechanisms like Neighbor Reports to speed discovery of APs across 25 channels, but that’s simply insufficient for 6GHz. The result of clients using these processes ineffectively is poor roaming and failed applications while mobile. It’s vital for the network administrator to understand how WiFi client devices are supposed to find new APs and how some client device vendors choose to operate in proprietary ways. Not understanding this can lead to frustration in troubleshooting poor WiFi 6E client connectivity and roaming.
